Another curated appearance! DM: Prince Harry honors his late mother Princess Diana's HIV work and says 'Africa is in his soul' as he jets into Miami for 'intimate' panel and charity polo match - after swerving livestream at $1,600-a-ticket event with Mindy Kaling And, of course, dining out on mummy again. What a surprise! And Africa! He loves it so much!! (No word about African Parks though). 'Africa's in my heart, Africa's in my soul,' he said. 'I first went there when I was 12... 13 years old, and after so many years I wanted to give back to it because it had given me so much. 'The vast open space, the cultures, the communities, the people, the wildlife, just the freedom was a huge piece of why I loved Africa so much. Last night Harold did a Sentebale thing and a "panel" presentation. Today, apparently Harold is playing polo with Nacho for Sentabale. This is different than the other polo happening this weekend that we have been told is being filmed for Netfilx. Will the cameras film Nacho and Harold playing today for Netflix too? As photos and video emerged from the event, it was revealed that Harry - who was not pictured with his wife Meghan Markle in Florida - is also due to take part in a charity polo match today, alongside his longtime friend Nacho Figueras. According to The Independent, longtime polo fanatic Harry will captain one of three teams taking part in the Royal Salute Polo Challenge, which is being held in aid of Sentebale, a charity he co-founded in 2016 to help vulnerable children in Lesotho, Botswana and Malawi, including those who are affected by extreme poverty and the HIV/Aids epidemic.Harry's participation in the polo match, which is being held at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Palm Beach, comes just one day after it was revealed that he is working on a new Netflix project that will focus on the glamorous world of professional polo. \**It is not known whether the Netflix cameras will be present at Harry's polo match on Friday, however there filming is expected to take place at the US Open Polo Championships, which take place in Wellington, Florida, over the weekend.  **Today Harry will endeavor to keep that cause going when he teams up with longtime polo player pal Nacho - who is known as the 'David Beckham of polo' - for their latest charity match. The event will see the duo going head-to-head as captains of opposing teams, with Harry leading one of three groups taking part in the competition, while Nacho will head up another. Nacho - who is an ambassador for Sentebale - was present at the event on Thursday night, where he was seen posing up with the charity's CEO Richard Miller, as well as panelist Dr. Chandauka.Although the polo player is not understood to have spoken on the panel, he will undoubtedly be given a role in Harry's upcoming Netflix series about the world of polo - having played a major part in the Duke's participation in the sport over the years. https://ift.tt/RPDyFEJ post link: https://ift.tt/UhfHPro author: Von_und_zu_ submitted: April 12, 2024 at 08:49PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. JOBS - Soft Sounds - experimental art rock that is not quite skronky. with a Zeuhl track (#8)
Give audiences a way into the bizarre and a way out of the normal. This ethos guides pop-minded experimentalists JOBS, and can be heard all over their latest full-length Soft Sounds. The album represents a creative leap forward for the quartet, one that finds them fusing organic, uniquely human gestures with precise repetition, creating an overall sound with distant echoes of folk songs, IDM, and 1970s jazz fusion. However, despite the subdued and soothing connotations those antecedents – and indeed the album’s very title – might conjure, Soft Sounds is a full-spectrum sonic experience best played loud, replete with songs that crackle with clarity and urgency. Recorded during drummer Max Jaffe’s recording residency at Brooklyn cultural center Pioneer Works, these sessions marked the quartet’s jubilant return to the in-person interplay that sustains their creative partnership and drives their most salient work. It was also the first occasion for Jaffe to take the helm as recording and mix engineer for the group, simultaneously using his hybrid electro-acoustic drum kit as a command center for many of the synthesizers, samplers, and effects that undergird Soft Sounds. The band arrived at these sessions with only a couple of guitarist Dave Scanlon’s melodies, bassist Ro Lundberg’s harmonic structures, and violist Jessica Pavone’s lines of lyrics. Despite the relatively modest batch of ideas, the sense of total autonomy afforded by the residency allowed them to write, orchestrate, record, edit, and mix in a semi-concurrent flow state. Across Soft Sounds, the sonic palette expands and contracts as each song sees fit. In JOBS’ music, Mark Hollis-type abstraction sits comfortably alongside grooves inspired by Jaffe’s time in Malawi. Their immersive sonic spaces suggest the speaker-test work of Ryoji Ikeda offset by soft-synth wobbles that recall an asexual reimagining of “brostep.” It’s in this reordering of the familiar and foreign that JOBS’ fluid approach reveals a sense of playful wonder and depth. Soft Sounds represents JOBS at a new state of maturity and self actualization as they hone their individual artistry and their collaboration across time zones and milestones.  Max Jaffe contributed drums, Sensory Percussion, synthesizer, vocals, engineering, and mixing Ro(b) Lundberg contributed bass guitar, fretless guitar, keyboards, vocals Jessica Pavone contributed viola, vocals Dave Scanlon contributed electric guitar, keyboards, vocals

Eastern and Southern Africa is a new sub-group within sub-Saharan Africa that includes 26 countries.1 According to the latest global poverty database, the region had the world’s highest extreme poverty rate—40.8 per cent in 2018 (Figure 2). Moreover, since 2017 it has been the region with the highest number of people living in  extreme poverty, surpassing South Asia. As of 2018, almost 40 per cent of the world’s extreme poor, or over 262 million people, live in Eastern and Southern Africa. More importantly, not only is this the region with the highest poverty rate and concentration of the extreme poor, but it’s pace of poverty reduction has also been very slow. The extreme poverty rate in Eastern and Southern Africa has declined by only 0.43 percentage points a year since 2010, less than half the global average of 0.93.
Why has poverty reduction in Eastern and Southern Africa been so slow? There are many possible drivers. First, the population growth rate in the region, at 2.6 per cent in 2019, is more than double the world’s population growth rate of 1.2 per cent. Second, its annualized growth rate of gross domestic product (GDP) per capita between 2010 and 2018 was only 0.1 per cent, while all other regions had an annualized growth rate higher than 0.8 per cent. Third, high inequality is a concern for the region. Five of the world’s ten most unequal countries are in this region, and all but two countries had higher Gini coefficients than the global median.2 Fourth, various shocks, including those related to climate, hit countries in the region more frequently than before. For example, since 2016, Malawi has experienced one drought, two cyclones and the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Horn of Africa experienced its worst drought in 70 years. The pace of poverty reduction is further exacerbated by surging inflation region-wide. Finally, fragility is an important challenge for this region. It includes multiple fragile States, such as Burundi, Somalia, South Sudan, etc., and refugees from those countries flow into other countries in the region.

Although coral reefs indeed boats beautiful fishes, it is easy to forget the colors and diversity of the fishes, mainly cichlid, dwelling within East African lakes. Normally species from the environments of lakes Malawi and Tanganyika are loosely known to freshwater fishkeepers, yet regarded as for specialists only, and wrongly assumed, perhaps, to be difficult as a result. Cichlids from other Rift Valley lakes, such as the 'nyarerei hap', Haplochromis nyererei, remain obscure in the aquarium hobby.
Not all of the exotic fishes in the aquarium trade have a popular, common name in the English language. H. nyererei is thus clumsily traded labeled with such improvised names as 'nyererei cichlid', 'hap nyererei', etc. This is a small and omnivorous cichlid, growing to about 7 and a 1/2 centimeters, or three inches long. Feeding on algae and small, benthic prey, H. nyererei is a denizen of rocky nearshore environments, purely within the Tanzanian region of Lake Victoria, and no other lake on earth.
The Great Rift Valley of East Africa is a major geological feature, that was formed by the failed separation of eastern Africa from the rest of the African mainland. She includes the geographical features called the Great Lakes, a series of the most remarkable lakes in the world, by a number of qualities. Not least their status as 'Darwin's dream ponds', effectively islands in which diverse and disparate radiations of cichlid fishes and other organisms, evolving in isolation from outside, but descended from small populations of early colonisers, arriving from outside the lakes.
Thus the Great Lakes of East Africa constiture what biogeographers call ecological islands, resembling such oceanic islands as the Galapagos in their high number of unique inhabitants, that are found nowhere else on earth, and in the remarkable adaptation of their inhabitants into new lifestyles, processes often making them dissimilar to their relatives. Although the Victorian cichlid diversity was extremely high, it was also recent, the radiation of 'haps' occurring in the latest Pleistocene, a rapid recovery following a period in which the paleoenvironment had been dessicated.
Despite its diversity, then, the cichlid fauna of Lake Victoria was a youthful one, and species such as H. nyarereri are not as ancient as Homo sapiens.Regarding her cichlid diversity, Victoria is often overshadowed in the imagination by the more ancient cichlid diversity of her neighbors, Malawi and Tanganyika, despite her own status as the second largest freshwater lake on earth. Sadly, this is because human activities have devastated the 'Darwin's dream pond' that is and was Lake Victoria.
Usually the devastation is attributed, almost entirely, to the introduction of a single predatory species, the adaptable and efficient Nile perch, or Lates niloticus. A magnificent work of nature in itself, L. niloticus is prized by Africans as a food resource, and was translocated into Lake Victoria to found a fishery during the 20th century. The ecological impacts on existing, indigenous fisheries was not properly considered, although a native tilapia was economically important to local people. It is estimated that some 76% of the surviving, purely native species in Lake Victoria, are still threatened with global extinction.
Yet L. niloticus was not alone responsible, for all the indigenous fish extinctions and decimations in Lake Victoria. Historical records and archeology show that a decline of indigenous cichlids had already begun, with some evidence for the selective overfishing of larger fish species, before L. niloticus was introduced into the lake, which happened as recently as the 1950s. Other human activities in the 20th century contributed to the eutrophication of the lake, which must have severely affected the cichlid populations within. Eutrophication was surely, in fact, the major driver of the Lake Victoria ecological collapse.
Which is not to deny the introduction of L. niloticus had adverse effects for the native cichlids, but the severity of its impact is too often overstated, as a catchy explanation for what was a complicated ecological collapse. Such matters are inherently more complicated, because ecologies are, by their nature, complicated networks of interaction. Fisheries scientists were already warning against the introduction of L. niloticus, which was still introduced anyway, and in secret, by colonial authorities seeking instant economic results.
The introduction of the invader thus occurred during an anti-ecological fad, and nowadays, the Nile perch that are still fished from Victoria, are mainly caught to be exported as meat; the local people cannot afford to eat these new 'local' fish - although technically, the lake fisheries now have more value; and the former subsistence fishery was destroyed. In any case the cumulative effects of human activities have severely harmed the Lake Victoria ecosystem, although fortunately, N. nyarereri has remained common.
Fisheries records from the 1920s show that a number of native haplochromine species are now extinct. Some other species of Haplochromis in the lake are reduced to survival in marginal habitats, such as the papyrus beds. Piscivorous cichlids suffered competition with the Nile perch, and also became its prey. Snail and insect eating species of cichlid have also declined. The decline of snail predators has increased cases of snail fever among local people. The parasitic blood flukes that are responsible infect humans after a life stage within freshwater snails.
Patterns of gene flow altered during the ecological crisis, with natural selection, favoring natural hybrids among the detrivorous cichlids. The latter guild include 80% of Victorian 'hap' species, and their feeding activities are fundamentally essential for restoring bottom sediments back into solution, therefore moving nutrients back up through the water, so that they are no longer locked into the lake bed. The decline of cichlids in the food webs of Lake Victoria, has contributed to there being more toxic, cyanobacterial blooms, and therefore disastrous, en masse fish deaths in the lake.
The Haplochromis sp. from Lake Victoria display marked sexual dimorphism. The male H. nyarereri are much more colorful than are the females, and the latter find the prettiness of the male fish sexually arousing. Thus sexual selection favors extreme coloration, in the males of the species only, which also happen to be a little larger than their females. The colour patterns of the males vary according to their locality of origin, so the fish are often labelled with collection details, in order to preserve these natural color strains in aquaria.
When these fish breed the female practices parental care, in the form of mouth brooding behaviors. Cichlids can be behaviorally complex fishes, and male H. nyererei are competitive and aggressive to one another, and they may be violent enough to kill one another, and they may also bother specific females unless they outnumber the males. Yet when they are accommodated alongside dissimilar fish, such as mbuna from Lake Malawi, this species reportedly shows no particular malice.
The water parameters should match those of Lake Victoria herself. In the portion of the lake where H. nyererei originates, the temperature is quite stable, and is usually 24 or 25 degrees, sometimes maybe 23 or 26 degrees centigrade. The chemistry of the lake is hard and base, and Victoria cichlids are commonly kept and bred in conditions between 7.2 and 8.4. but it parts of the lake it has been measured higher or lower The wild localities where H. nyarereri originates, have been sampled and found to have pH values above 8 and lower than 9.
This freshwater fish, like many other cichlids in rift lakes, is a rock dweller. Therefore the aquascape provided for them, ought to be a secure structure of rockwork. In the wild the fish show an affinity for shelf-like structures, so this, too, should be replicated for accuracy. The fish are easy to feed, and in this regard pose no problems. Both animal and algal food sources should be offered them, and with items of animal derivation prefominating. In all, the painted cichlid of Lake Victoria is an evolutionary masterpiece, suitable for even novice aquarists willing to consider it's hardwater, nearshore origins in Africa.

I cut smoky bases and reveal the Rock displays
In this week’s vlog, we’re unveiling something truly special! Join me for the grand reveal of the stone cages at The Rockshop, showcasing a vibrant collection of beautiful stones including rose quartz, honey agate, tiger’s eye, aventurine, blue sodalite, and chevron amethyst. It's a feast for the eyes, especially with the bougainvillea in full bloom, creating a stunning backdrop. However, the Jacaranda tree is shedding its purple flowers, which keeps us busy with clean-up! Aside from the stone reveal, I’m excited to share my ongoing art project—I'm painting a scene of four ladies working in a sugar cane field in Mauritius and just completed five small canvases. These pieces have dark backgrounds with a splash of color, part of a new universal style I’m experimenting with that I hope will be popular and easy to reproduce. We also dive into the final sorting of the latest consignment from Malawi, featuring smoky quartz with feldspar and aegerine. I even cut a few stones to display them better in the shop. This video gives you a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes action at The Rockshop at Hartbeespoortdam! Don't miss out on this week's journey filled with creativity, nature, and stunning stones!

Most Of The World Agrees Illegal Regime of Isra-hell’s Occupation Of “Forever Palestine 🇵🇸” Must End. The War Criminal, Liar, Conspirator, Genocidal U.S. Is Fine With It.
The United States Voted Against a U.N. Resolution that Sets a 12-Month Timeframe to End Isra-hell’s Illegal Occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza.
— By Jonah Valdez | September 18 2024 | The Intercept
Tumblr media
The U.N. General Assembly endorses a resolution calling for an end to Israel’s “unlawful” presence in the region within 12 months, which was introduced by Palestine, in NYC on Sept. 18, 2024. Photo: Selcuk Acar/Anadolu/Getty Images
The United Nations 🇺🇳 passed a historic resolution Wednesday that calls for the end of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza, with 124 of the 181 member states voting in favor of the measure.
The United States, alongside 13 other nations, voted against the resolution, continuing its unconditional support for Israel’s actions in Palestine.
The sweeping resolution builds on an unprecedented July 19 ruling from the U.N.’s top court, the International Court of Justice, which declared Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories as an illegal, apartheid system that must cease. The latest resolution, introduced by Palestine, affirms the July ruling, setting a 12-month timeframe for the withdrawal of Israeli military from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including the removal of Israeli settlers, a halt to Israel’s annexation of Palestinian land, as well as the return of land seized from Palestinians since the occupation began in 1967.
Wednesday’s vote had 124 nations in favor of the resolution, 14 against, and 43 abstaining. In addition to the United States and Israel, the coalition of 14 nations opposing the resolution included just two European states, Czechia and Hungary; two South American countries, Argentina and Paraguay; the African nation of Malawi; Papua New Guinea; and six tiny Pacific Island nations.
“This resolution makes it abundantly clear that the vast majority of the international community support the findings of the International Court of Justice that Israel’s 57-year occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory is a violation of international law and should not be allowed to continue,” said Jessica Peake, an international law professor at UCLA Law, adding that vote is “historic” given Palestine’s status as a new member of the United Nations General Assembly.
After the assembly approved a resolution — despite U.S. opposition — in May, the State of Palestine has been seated among member states and given the right to introduce proposals and participate in committees, but still cannot vote.
However, the U.N. resolution, much like the U.N. court’s July opinion, is not legally binding, and the U.N. has no way of enforcing its rulings.
“And so now it’s on other member states in the international community to really put pressure on Israel and its allies to make that happen,” Peake said. She mentioned potential levers to get Israel to act, such as countries more vocally urging the end of the illegal occupation, withholding military aid, and issuing further sanctions. The United States sends billions of dollars of military aid to Israel each year.
Much of the opposition against the resolution had to do with its scope, with some nations arguing it goes beyond what the July advisory opinion asks for. Nations who voted against the resolution, or abstained, criticized the 12-month timeframe of ending the occupation as unrealistic and said Israel needs to be a more significant negotiating partner. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Linda Thomas-Greenfield previously said the resolution further undermines efforts to negotiate a two-state solution. President Joe Biden’s administration, much like previous administrations, has said it supports Palestinian sovereignty and a two-state solution but has yet to lay out any viable path toward accomplishing it.
Further obscuring any efforts toward Palestinian statehood, Thomas-Greenfield said during a panel at the Council of Foreign Affairs in New York that Palestine is not ready to be an independent nation. “I do not believe the Palestinians, as they exist right now, have all of the elements to give it statehood,” she said, adding that she had concerns around “issues of peace and security.”
Even so, Peake said the U.N.’s recognition of Israel as an occupying power is accurate and said the 12-month timeframe gives the resolution a needed deadline.
“Otherwise, we just have some rather nebulous statement that is encouraging Israel to withdraw,” she said. “I think it really helps us see 12 months from now, what has Israel done? It puts a time limit on it — it puts a moment in time where the international community can look at Israel’s behavior and take stock of has it, or has it not, fulfilled the recommendations that the General Assembly has made through this resolution.”
Ahead of the vote, more than 30 human rights groups released a letter urging U.N. members to vote in favor of the resolution, as well as the end of weapons sales and transfers to Israel. The letter listed violations of humanitarian law, such as the use of arms to attack Palestinian civilians, including children, arbitrarily imprisoning Palestinians, and the deprivation of freedom of movement and medical assistance.
“Failure to adhere to the ICJ’s advisory opinion will send a message that states can be selective in their application of international law,” the letter read. “It is imperative that states reinforce and show their commitment to international institutions and the international order that has been in place for nearly 80 years.”

The political landscape of Africa is a complex tapestry of diverse ideologies, leadership transitions, and socio-political movements. From democratic progress and regional collaborations to governance challenges and societal aspirations, this article aims to provide an overview of the latest African politics news updates. By exploring the continent's political developments, we gain insight into the ongoing efforts, successes, and struggles that shape Africa's political future.
Democratic Transitions and Governance:
Many African nations have made significant strides in strengthening democratic institutions and promoting transparent governance. Several countries have witnessed peaceful transitions of power through democratic elections, exemplifying the continent's commitment to democratic principles. Countries such as Ghana, Senegal, and Malawi have held successful elections, emphasizing the importance of inclusive political processes and the will of the people. However, challenges such as corruption, weak institutions, and electoral irregularities persist in some regions, necessitating continued efforts to uphold democratic values.

Regional Collaborations and Integration:
Regional collaborations and integration efforts are gaining momentum across Africa. The African Union (AU) continues to play a vital role in fostering unity, peace, and development on the continent. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a landmark agreement that aims to create the world's largest free trade area, fostering economic integration and boosting intra-African trade. Collaborative initiatives like the East African Community (EAC), Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) further promote regional cooperation in areas such as security, infrastructure development, and economic stability.
Socio-Political Movements and Activism:
Socio-political movements and civil society organizations are instrumental in driving change and advocating for the rights and aspirations of African citizens. Across the continent, grassroots movements are demanding accountability, social justice, and equal rights. Youth-led initiatives are particularly noteworthy, with young Africans at the forefront of advocating for political reform, climate action, and social inclusion. Movements like the #EndSARS protests in Nigeria and the Sudanese Revolution serve as powerful reminders of the agency and resilience of African citizens in shaping their political landscape.

4. Security and Conflict Resolution:
While progress has been made in resolving conflicts and maintaining peace, Africa continues to face security challenges in various regions. Armed conflicts, terrorism, and political instability remain significant issues in countries such as Libya, Somalia, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Regional and international efforts, including peacekeeping missions by the United Nations and regional organizations, are striving to restore stability and promote conflict resolution. The pursuit of lasting peace and security remains a priority for the continent, as it is essential for social development and economic prosperity.
The political landscape of Africa is a dynamic arena that encompasses both progress and challenges. Democratic transitions, regional collaborations, and socio-political movements continue to shape the continent's political future. While Africa celebrates democratic successes and economic integration, there is still work to be done in addressing governance issues, promoting inclusive politics, and resolving conflicts. By staying informed about the latest African politics news updates, we can appreciate the efforts, complexities, and aspirations that define Africa's political landscape, and support the continent's journey towards sustainable development and good governance.
